More than twenty people were killed this Sunday evening around 20h in Gatumba (northwestern Bujumbura town) at around 12 km from Bujumbura, said Jacques Minani, the Governor of Bujumbura.
Armed with rifles, grenades and clubs, according to survivors and the Bujumbura Governor himself, these gunmen in military and police uniforms surrounded the pub and started shooting.
“Even the death toll is likely to rise as so many have been seriously injured” said Bujumbura Governor this night, joined by telephone.
This night in different hospitals in Bujumbura town on Sunday (except in military hospital where journalists were refused access) the wounds were lying or simply dying in hospital corridors as the capacity was exceeded.
No one has claimed the attack till now, but this comes to reinforce, among opinions, the existing of a nascent rebellion in Burundi, an idea which is formally rejected by Bujumbura, arguing that only armed bandits are violating and killing in Burundi.
One of the survivors in hospital this Sunday about 24 h reported that since the evening of Sunday, they did not suspect anything.
However, he stressed that these armed gunmen came in and started shooting among people who were drinking, in the pub.
“They were in military uniforms and some others were wearing police uniforms” said a survivor, some minutes after he arrives in hospital.
