Bomb scare at Kenya PM’s office

(Alshahid)Kenya’s Prime Minister Raila Odinga has been evacuated from his office after an unexploded hand grenade was found in another part of the building he works in, officials said Tuesday.

Panic gripped staff at the PM’s office and those in the building as word spread regarding the discovery of the explosive.

Mr Odinga was in his office meeting Chief Justice Willy Mutunga when police asked everyone to evacuate the building so that they could search it after the grenade was discovered.

Deputy police spokesman Charles Owino said a plumber found the grenade behind a water tank as he was checking the water system near the underground parking lot at Odinga’s office building.

Minutes later, bomb disposal officers and police with sniffer dogs searched the building after the grenade was found in a store near the prime minister’s office.

No other explosive devices were found, and police said it was too early to say who could have planted the grenade.

“After analysis, we confirmed that the grenade is harmless, it is used for training and is not the kind of grenade that is used for killing or maiming people,” Owino said.

Three grenades exploded at a political rally in downtown Nairobi in June last year, killing six people.

In December two traffic police died when they were shot and a third was seriously injured by a grenade. One person was killed in a grenade attack on a bus company that same month.
